Welcome to the 2016/17 Little Athletics Season

Welcome to all our returning and new athletes and their families for the 2016/17 Little Athletics season. Registrations are now open and are rolling in at an increasing rate.

This season we are back at our home ground at Jack Cook Memorial Park after an extensive (and extended) upgrade. The park is looking good and ready to go! Thanks go to the Brisbane City Council's City Projects team and especially Councillor Julian Simmonds for their commitment and persistence in getting the job done. (Note - We are planning at hosting a couple of meets at UQ during the season for those who still hanker for a taste of the tartan track).

Our season kicks off with two orientation meets before the school holidays (Saturday 3 September and Saturday 10 September). These will have a full program of events, but the emphasis is on getting our new athletes and parents/officials up to speed on how we operate. Results are recorded (but don't count for Centre Championship points).  We return again to competition in October after the school holidays.

For more information about our centre and how we operate please check out our 2016/17 Handbook.

Parents please be aware the successful operation of our meets relies on you pitching in and helping out. The athletes really benefit from seeing you participate. There's a wide variety of roles from serving at the canteen, marshalling an age group of athletes, to measuring, timekeeping and my particular favourite raking the long jump pit. For those interested in getting more involved, we'd encourage you to get qualified as an official or coach.

Our Little Athletics Centre has been operating for over 30 years, but the history of the Toowong Harriers athletics club goes back to 1894. We merged the two clubs last year and are looking at a number of exciting initiatives to build on our proud tradition as one of the oldest athletics clubs in the state. With our new facilities and our leadership in being the first club affiliated with both Queensland Athletics (QA) and Little Athletics Queensland (LAQ), we're in a unique position to encourage a lifelong love of the great sport of athletics.

I'm looking forward to seeing lots of old and new faces as we get back into another season of Family, Fun and Fitness.

If you register before midnight the Thursday before the meet, we will have your gear as ready as possible (uniforms to be fitted) on the day.

Why Little Athletics?

Mainly ... because it develops a variety of skills, it's relatively inexpensive and it provides fun for the whole family, but there's lots more. See below 'Participation'. For special features of our Centre, click here.

Little Athletics is a sport designed for children aged five to seventeen.  They are encouraged to participate in all disciplines with each centre meeting offering a balance of events ie. running, jumping and throwing.

This emphasis on full participation provides every opportunity for young athletes to develop balance, stamina, strength, coordination and self control.  Little Athletics is not about who won, who came second or even last.  It is about encouraging each and every athlete to better their own previous best performances.

It is about having Fun with friends.  Athletes are grouped in ages and many relationships are developed with others away from their regular circle of school friends.

It is about the Family playing together and growing strong together.  The timekeepers, the judges, the long jump officials are all mums and dads just like you and I.  Many have no previous experience, but without your effort nothing happens.  You might consider gaining qualifications for coaching or sitting for officials gradings.  Every little bit helps our athletes.

It is about developing Fitness in a safe and healthy sport.  Athletics involves training sessions, warm-up sessions, coaching clinics and much encouragement and guidance from committed and caring parents.
